After Bike Polo and the world of surfing, SUN68 presents Italian Jam: a new video project on women’s Roller Derby in Italy.
Conceived and directed by Michele Comi, and produced by SUN68, Italian Jam is a 30-minute documentary which condenses all the shooting material that the director has collected over months spent alongside the players until the World Championship in Dallas, in December 2014. Images, moments and emo-interviews, in which the sensitive side of the girls of Team Italy is revealed, while still portraying the multiple aspects of the sport and the world of Roller Derby.
On the surface, Roller Derby is all adrenaline, tumbles, roller skates, rock & roll, head-on collisions, tattoos and speed, but it also embodies friendship, a DIY attitude, beauty, enthusiasm, sacrifice and solidarity. A curious mix of skating and rugby, Roller Derby is a sport that was born in the USA in the 30s and was practiced and followed by millions of people and fans for about 10 years. Then it disappeared, until a few years ago when a strong revival took place all over the world: in the United States, Northern Europe, Australia and now Italy. The players of this “alternative” sport, in Italy and in the whole world, are strong women, who work as chefs, fashion designers, office employees, teachers, mothers, temps, students.
Italian Jam was premiered in Milano on September 16th, during an event organized by SUN68 in partnership with OnStage, featuring a special performance by the Roller Girls and a concert by Olly Riva & the Soul Rockets.
